Written by a former US Navy Lt.
The books in the Hidden Valor series are long. The prequel is 52,000 words. Books 1-3 range from 115,000-145,000 apiece and feature Ruger—Kate's 3 yr old German Shepherd & self-appointed therapy dog.
Please Note: There is a dog, but this is not a cozy mystery series. Cursing & gritty, graphic crime scenes abound throughout the Hidden Valor books. This series also contains a raw & honest portrayal of the themes of PTSD & suicide. If you like strong, female protagonists and seriously gritty, complex suspense that twists and turns all the way to The End, you'll love Candace Irving's Hidden Valor series.

Lots of plot twists and turns, interesting characters, and a fast paced read. I had a hard time putting this story down and often gave up sleep to read just "a bit more". Cannot wait to read the rest of the series.
Reading mystery/crime fiction has been among my favorite pastimes since I devoured Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys in the late 1950s. I've never served in the military (I was drafted but ended up with a 4-F deferment). However, I do have a couple of decades of service as a law enforcement chaplain (pastoral care for cops).
And in 2024 I re-read the entire corpus by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.
I'm about halfway through In the Name Of and have read the previous Kate/Ruger books. Candace Irving is a great story teller and masterfully handles the twists and turns of a good crime/mystery tale. Moreover, her character development is breathtaking, including the heroic German Shepherd.
In fact, Ruger was the deal closer in buying the series. I'm a trainer of hunting and service dogs. Aside from working alongside handlers and their police dogs I also volunteer with TSA. If you see me wandering aimlessly around Salt Lake City International Airport chances are I'm loaded with explosive "bait" and the bomb dogs are hunting me down. All that to say, I appreciate realistic writing about a good dog like Ruger.
And lastly, I have met and cared for veterans like the characters in Irving's books. She is blessedly gifted in her insights into their struggles, failures, and victories.
I'm looking forward to reading the series, and will lament when it ends.
I just finished binge reading this entire series and I absolutely loved them! Though I’ve never been shot or gone through the Hell that Kate did, as an avid dog lover myself, I can respect the complete love and bond those two have. I have already preordered the next book in the series and I seriously hope you continue on with these two warriors for a long time. Thanks so much for never pulling any punches in your story lines!
She is a first class writer!! I enjoy reading her books and the characters feel so real!! Even Ruger!! I’m looking forward to reading more from her!!
Riveting, gruesome, twists & turns! Couldn't put it down until I finished reading it! PTSD is woven throughout the story just like our veterans experience it after horrors of war. The dog in the story exemplifies how they support veterans facing PTSD. Characters are believable & the main character gives us a strong woman that faces PTSD from her army past. Can't wait to see how the characters develop in the next book!
